The coming of Christmas on the tides

Experience the magic of the 20th Wells Christmastide Festival this November - where coastal charm meets yuletide merriment

For Christians, Christmastide traditionally begins on Christmas Day and spans 12 days, culminating in a celebratory feast on 6th January. However, the festive spirit arrives much earlier in Wells-next-the-Sea and wider Norfolk – brought in not by the calendar, but by the tides.

This year, the 20th Wells Christmastide Festival will take place from Saturday 22nd to Sunday 23rd November, carefully timed to align with the rhythms of the sea.

“Guided by cosmic forces and the tidal variations along our coastline, we’ve chosen dates that give as many families as possible the chance to enjoy Santa’s arrival,” says committee member Jessica Curtis. “We can’t wait to welcome everyone for a weekend of festive cheer, entertainment and community spirit.”

On the Saturday, St Nicholas will make his grand entrance by boat, accompanied by a crew of energetic elves and Christmas companions. Spectators will gather behind the harbour wall to greet him, with eyes fixed eagerly on the water.

“There’s nothing like hearing the excitement in children’s voices as they spot Santa approaching from the outer harbour,” Jessica shares. “That moment alone makes all the planning and effort worthwhile.”

Past arrivals have featured everything from stormtroopers to ukulele flash mobs and even a pirate choir. “You never know who will show up!” Jessica adds, smiling. “It enhances the excitement.”

Twinkling lights spill from shop windows and street corners, casting a warm glow that sets the scene for a magical weekend. A firework spectacular will light up the sky as Santa makes his way through the crowds on his sleigh, passing the famous crab pot Christmas tree on the way to his grotto at The Maltings.

Before this dazzling finale, Wells will be alive with festive energy. Saturday’s celebrations begin at 10:30am, ushering in a full day of fun, frivolity and yuletide cheer. Families can browse bustling craft stalls, savour delicious street food, enjoy live music and join the fun with face painting and seasonal activities. Keep watch for towering stilt walkers and daring fire eaters in glittering festive attire, parading through the streets with performances that promise to enchant and entertain.

At the heart of town along Staithe Street, just 100 metres from the quay, ITV News Presenter David Whiteley will lead the countdown to Santa’s arrival with the ceremonial switching on of the lights, a cherished festival tradition.

“The switch on is followed by our lantern parade down to the harbour where Father Christmas awaits,” Jessica explains. “With a Samba band setting the beat and lanterns glowing so brightly they can be seen from across the marshes, the atmosphere is unforgettable.”

Since its launch in 2005, when Santa famously water-skied into the quay, the festival has flourished into one of Norfolk’s favourite free seasonal events, drawing thousands of visitors each year.

“We’re thrilled that, through fundraising, we can transform our wonderful Wells into a winter haven for all to enjoy,” says Jessica. “It’s about bringing people together, supporting town businesses and creating lasting memories.”

As the Christmastide Festival continues to grow, community support remains essential to its success and longevity. Without sponsors, local partners and committed volunteers like Jessica, it just wouldn’t be possible.

“It’s not just the planning and preparations - we need help with everything from setting up and manning stalls to guiding spectators and ensuring safety measures are followed,” Jessica says. “Support is also vital for hosting displays like the Christmas Tree Festival, which takes place concurrently at the Gordon Barrett Memorial Hall.”

Featuring a showcase of sparkling trees sponsored by local charities and plenty of pocket-friendly treats, the Christmas Tree Festival is a must-visit for anyone seeking seasonal joy.

“We can’t wait to welcome you to what promises to be our biggest and best Christmastide yet,” Jessica beams. “So, don your favourite festive outfit, wrap up warm and head to our coastal wonderland. It’s where the spirit of Christmas truly comes alive.”
